Could the place you live be sinking into the ground? Just depends on what state you live in.
34 million Americans are living in cities that are sinking, a Columbia University study recently found. By using satellite technology and measuring surface changes between 2015 and 2021, researchers discovered these cities are sinking, and you keep losing your land.
A lot of people in Cali are moving to Nevada because they believe their state will one day be under water, so they're buying in Vegas so someday they'll have ocean front property. But this isn't the place we're talking about. It's further South.
All the cities that are sinking are in Texas. Big enough to be a country on it's own. But for how long if these cities are sinking?
Houston, Fort Worth, and Dallas…all Texas cities…are sinking the fastest. Nationally, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston contain 82% of building at high risk. Why are cities sinking? Texas may be at risk due to increased water demands and groundwater depletion.
