Yesterday was the day. My wife had a hair appointment and the question came up about keeping extensions or taking them out. Wife got them taken out, hair is shorter, and wife leaves happy with another appointment. Her and her stylist Ashley are friends, and the get each other. So usually when my wife Amy leaves she's super happy.
But did you think about your stylists feelings? Are you saying things that might be upsetting them and not even realize? Here are some of the things you could be doing.
- Refer to them as your girl – (Name here), a stylist out of Atlanta says she loves her clients but hates when they call her “their girl.” She says, “I know that it’s not personal, but when I run into a client and she’s like, ‘Oh, this is Jenna, she’s my hair girl, she’s so good to me,’ it makes me feel like I’m a pet, not a professional. Like, would you call your accountant ‘your girl’?”
- Don’t ask to be in their stories – Social media is how many stylists brand themselves so choosing which clients to feature on their page is mainly based on their career goals and what hashtags are trending. “It really has nothing to do with the person and everything to do with the hair,” says K., a stylist in New York City.
- Take your complaints to Yelp before talking to them first –Kara out of New Jersey says “I hate when everything seems great during an appointment, and then I get trashed on social media. If you have a problem, please tell us so we can make it better for you.”
- Show up late – Being late affects not only the person after you, but it could also cause your stylist to attempt to rush or not even complete your desired look.
So if you have your appointment today keep these tips in mind.
