So right now, how many expired items do you think you have in your refrigerator? Well, the average American has at least 5 expired items. After a survey of 2000 Americans, It was estimated it was 5 weeks before the foulest time in their fridge was discovered. A lot of people are blaming the pandemic for all the leftovers. The average person spent about 20 minutes in the kitchen each day since the pandemic started. That's a total of 97 additional hours. So it's no wonder 2 in 3 said their increased cooking habits led to more leftovers sitting in their fridge. Almost half have thrown out a whole container of leftovers because the smell was so bad. Forgotten leftovers can lead to trouble later, as 56% say they hate wasting food, 45% hate the clean up and 41% can't stand the smell of their forgotten food. So most people feel the fridge should be cleaned out every month, but most people who responded said they have gone 5 months without doing it.
