I Wrote This Song About My Father & It Changed Our Relationship...

I wrote this song about my father and it changed our relationship….. for the better. Now everything isn’t sunshine and rainbows but, this song put our relationship as father and son in a better place. It’s crazy to me that I released this song and music video five years ago already. I’m going to get vulnerable for a second I hope you don’t mind. I remember writing this song with tears flowing the entire time. There was so much hurt in my heart at the time because of my father. I grew up with loving but divorced parents. After a while because of the battles, my dad was having personally our relationship started to drift away. This was difficult for me growing up because my dad was like superman to me you know? I didn’t have all those father & son talks, we never played catch together or anything like that. So as a songwriter before getting into DJ’ing and radio I decided to take on the difficult task of putting all my feelings into a song. I had Eric Clapton’s “Father’s Eyes” sampled into a beat and went for it. This seemed nearly impossible but, I gutted through it and created a piece of work I’m probably most proud of. This was necessary for me to be able to heal as a man and as a son. The silver lining here is that this I believe may have saved my relationship with my dad from getting worse. Again, it’s not perfect by any means but, it’s certainly better off. Bottom line…. I know father’s day can be tough for some people, myself included. So, maybe on some level you can relate to this or empathize with this song. Thank you for reading and please take a look at my most heartfelt piece of work below. Remember, It’s cool to be you! - JR
