Republic Records Bans the Term 'Urban' Within the Label

Republic Records Bans the Term 'Urban' Within Label: 'We Encourage the Music Industry to Follow Suit'In a glimpse of what’s to come as protests over racial equality continue across the world, Republic Records is forging forward and removing the term “Urban” from their departments, employee titles, and genres.

“Over time the meaning and connotations of “urban” have shifted and it developed into a generalization of Black people in many sectors of the music industry, including employees and music by Black artists,”Republic said in a statement.

Republic Records is encouraging other music labels to follow suit and says they will donate $25 million to organizations that benefit black people during phase one of several initiatives they intend to implement.

How does the term “urban” make you feel? Should the music industry dump the term?
