Mustard Lovers Beware - There's Going to Be A Shortage This Summer

A seed shortage could result in less mustard on the shelves this summer. Seed supplies from both France and Canada, large distributors for mustard with Canada being the largest, haven't produced near as many seeds as they usually do. In Canada, mustard plants that should typically produce 8-10 seeds in a pod resulted in only 4-6. In France, bad climate changes have brought on a poor harvest. The price of the seeds has gone up 3-4x and the production rate is at about a 50% decrease. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine is also adversely affecting the mustard supply chain. In 2020, Russia and Ukraine were the third and fifth exporters of mustard seeds in the world, respectively.

Mustard isn't the only condiment at risk. In April, Sriracha maker Huy Fong Foods announced that climate conditions had depleted its supply of the hot sauce. The weather had adverse affects on the quality of the chili peppers resulting in a severe shortage of chili.
