Labor Day weekend is here, which means an extra day off, good food, and hopefully no calls from work. But if your bank is injured and you can't spring for a big getaway, don’t stress. There are fun free things to do in your backyard. Oh, and they won't cost you very much $$$$!

5 Go Old-School With a Block Party

Round up the neighbors, drag out some speakers, and fire up the grills. Everyone brings a dish, everyone wins. Plus, it’s the perfect chance to finally learn the names of the people across the street or the people who live behind you.

4 Have a DIY Movie Marathon Under the Stars

Grab your laptop, hang up a sheet, and boom, instant movie theater outside in your yard. Make some snacks, and enjoy your favs outside under the stars....or clouds. We don't know the weather yet lol.

3 Take Advantage of Nature

Hiking trails, state parks, or even just a long bike ride can feel like a real escape. In the end your taxes have paid for most of these areas, so you should take them in and enjoy something free to do, or at least wear the kids down then it can be cocktail hour for you and your friends.

2 Host a Backyard/Livingroom Games Tournament

Cornhole, card games, flip cup (you can use root beer if you're playing with kids. But you name it. Organize a little tournament with family or friends and give the winner bragging rights until next year. There will totally be no fighting at all right?

Now, the number 1 thing you can do on the cheap for Labor Day......

Hit Up a Free Festival or Concert

Most cities throw free festivals over Labor Day weekend, with things like food trucks, live music, and maybe even a fireworks show. Just bring a blanket, a cooler, and your party hat. In the past my dad thought these things weren't fun. But I've taken my family to events where there are large crowds of people looking for free for their family. It's what you make of it. Not the best band? But it was worth the memories you made with your family while saving a few bucks.

No matter what you do this holiday weekend, do one thing. If you're going to have drinks, get a ride or ride share. You mean a lot to us, and we want to have more cheap backyard parties with you in the future.
